Weekly Listening Journal: 1965 to 1980 Part III

"(Your Love Has Lifted Me) Higher And Higher" by Rita Coolidge

"You Light Up My Life" by Debby Boone

"Last Dance" by Donna Summer

"Because The Night" by Patti Smith Group

"I Love The Nightlife (Disco ‘Round)" by Alicia Bridges

"I Will Survive" by Gloria Gaynor

When you think of female pop artists from the 70s, you think of Gloria Gaynor, or at least I do. Other the disco beat going on, the lyrics really make the song. It’s a very empowering song.

"Fire" by The Pointer Sisters

"Ring My Bell" by Anita Ward

"The Rose" by Bette Midler

I’ve always felt a special connection to this song. Bette Midler has a wonderful singing voice and the lyrics are very emotional. It’s a shame this is the only song I’ve heard of by her.

"Barracuda" by Heart

This song takes me back to ninth grade playing Guitar Hero III. A band like Heart shows you what women in rock and roll can do. I’ve even studied them under my guitar teacher!

"Heart Of Glass" by Blondie

I had completely forgotten about this song by Blondie. It’s interesting to hear a new wave song like this on the playlist. Not to mention Deborah Harry deserves credit for going out into a man’s world and totally rocking it.

"Son Of A Preacher Man" by Aretha Franklin

This is also another interesting choice. Aretha Franklin has some vocal chords on her! I wasn’t aware how the gospel genre was faring during this time, but it seems like it’s alive and well.
